Boiler service plans explained
Plans, cover or pay each year: what you actually get and the questions to ask before signing.
A boiler service plan spreads the cost of your yearly service into monthly payments and usually books it for you. It is not the same as boiler cover, which is insurance for repairs. Before signing up, check what is included, whether there is an excess or call out charge, and what happens if your boiler is old.

You need this when
If one of these sounds like your boiler, it is time to book.
- You keep forgetting when the boiler service is due
- You want the yearly cost spread across the year
- You are a landlord with several properties to keep on cycle
- You are comparing a service plan with boiler cover
- Your boiler is getting older and you are thinking about repairs
- You want to know if a plan is worth it for a newer boiler
What happens,
step by step.
- 01
Check your warranty
If your boiler is new, the maker's guarantee may already cover repairs. You still need the yearly service.
- 02
Decide what you want covered
Just the service, or repairs too. Repairs make it insurance, with its own terms and exclusions.
- 03
Read the small print
Look for excess charges, age limits, exclusions for sludge or limescale damage, and cancellation terms.
- 04
Book the service
Whichever route you choose, get the boiler serviced every year and keep the record.

Three ways to pay for servicing
| Option | What it is | Who it suits | |---|---|---| | Pay as you go | Book and pay for a service once a year | Owners with a newer boiler under warranty, or anyone who likes to choose each year | | Service plan | Monthly payment that covers the yearly service and books it in | People who want reminders and spread costs | | Boiler cover | Insurance that pays for some repairs, often with a service included | Owners of older boilers who want protection against repair bills |
Boiler cover is a regulated insurance product. Its terms decide what is paid for, and many policies exclude damage from sludge or limescale, or need a system check before cover starts. That matters in London, where hard water and older systems are common.
Questions to ask before signing
- Does the plan include a full service, with the case off and a combustion test?
- Is there a call out charge or excess for repairs?
- Are there age limits on the boiler?
- Are limescale and sludge damage excluded? If so, how will that be judged?
- Is a landlord gas safety record included or extra?
- How easy is it to cancel, and does the price go up after the first year?
- Who does the work, and are they Gas Safe registered?
Gas work in the UK must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Whoever you book, ask for the ID card and check it on the Gas Safe Register.
Ask too what the plan does if the engineer finds a problem at the service. Some plans include the repair, some quote it separately, and some exclude it altogether. Knowing that before you sign avoids a surprise in winter.
Do you need one with a new boiler?
A new boiler from Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi, Ideal, Viessmann or Glow-worm comes with a maker's guarantee that covers faults for its term, as long as you meet the conditions, which usually include a yearly service. So repair cover can overlap with what you already have. What you do need is the yearly service, on time, and the record. Our boilers we service page lists what each maker says.
For older boilers outside warranty, the choice is more personal. Some people prefer cover. Others put money aside and pay for repairs when needed. Either way, a yearly service catches small faults before they become breakdowns.
Landlords with more than one property
Landlords in south and west London with several flats often care more about dates than monthly costs. Every gas safety record runs 12 months, and you can renew up to two months early and keep the expiry date. A simple list of addresses and due dates, booked two months ahead, keeps every property in line.
Price
What affects the price
We do not invent plan prices. For pay as you go servicing, the price is confirmed when you book. For third party plans and cover, compare the yearly total, the excess and the exclusions, not just the monthly figure.
| What | Price |
|---|---|
| One off gas boiler service (UK average, for comparison) | £80 to £120 |
| Pay as you go service with us | quote on booking |

What people ask about boiler service plans explained in London.
Just ask usIs a boiler service plan worth it?
It depends on your boiler. For a new boiler under warranty, paying for the yearly service may be enough. For an older boiler, cover that includes repairs might suit, if the exclusions fit your system.
Is a service plan the same as boiler cover?
No. A service plan pays for the yearly service. Boiler cover is insurance that pays for some repairs and often includes a service.
Does a plan keep my warranty valid?
Only if the service is done every year to the maker's instructions and recorded. The plan itself does not matter to the maker, the service does.
