Short answer: On many Ideal boilers, including the Logic range, F1 means low water pressure and L2 means ignition lockout, where the boiler tried to light and failed. For F1, check and top up the pressure. For L2, check the gas supply and whether an outside condensate pipe has frozen, then reset once. If either code returns, book a repair.
Ideal boilers, especially the Logic and Vogue ranges, are common in London homes. Two codes cause most of the worried searches: F1 and L2.
F1: low water pressure
F1 means the boiler has detected low water pressure in the sealed heating system. It will not run until pressure is restored.
What to do
- Look at the pressure gauge. If it is below about 1 bar, it is low. Check your manual for the figure for your model.
- Top up using the filling loop as the manual shows. Close the loop taps afterwards.
- Reset the boiler.
- Watch the pressure over the next few days.
If F1 keeps coming back
Water is leaving the system. Usual causes:
| Cause | Sign |
|---|---|
| Leak on a radiator valve or pipe | Damp patches, staining |
| Pressure relief valve letting by | Copper pipe outside dripping |
| Flat expansion vessel | Pressure jumps up when hot, falls when cold |
| Leak inside the boiler | Water under the boiler |
Our post on boiler pressure keeps dropping explains each one.
L2: ignition lockout
L2 means the boiler tried to light and could not detect a flame, so it locked out for safety.
Common causes
| Cause | Can you check it? |
|---|---|
| Gas off at the meter or no credit | Yes |
| Other gas appliances not working | Yes, check the hob |
| Frozen condensate pipe | Yes, look outside in cold weather |
| Blocked condensate trap | No, engineer |
| Worn or dirty ignition or sensing electrode | No, engineer |
| Gas valve or PCB fault | No, engineer |
What to do
- Check the gas is on and other gas appliances work.
- If you have a prepayment meter, check it has credit.
- In cold weather, check the condensate pipe where it runs outside. If frozen, thaw with warm, not boiling, water. See our post on frozen condensate pipes.
- Reset once.
If L2 returns, book a boiler repair.
Why L2 and frost go together
Condensing boilers produce acidic water that drains through a plastic condensate pipe. If that pipe runs outside, especially if it is thin and unlagged, it can freeze in a cold snap. Water backs up into the boiler and a sensor stops it lighting. Many boilers show an ignition lockout code when this happens, and some models have their own condensate fault code.
In the southern suburbs of Croydon, such as Purley, Coulsdon and Selsdon, many 1930s houses have boilers in kitchens or garages with condensate pipes running along outside walls. These freeze more easily than pipes on inner London terraces. Our Croydon area page covers the housing there.
Quick reference
| Code | Meaning | First check |
|---|---|---|
| F1 | Low water pressure | Gauge, top up via filling loop |
| L2 | Ignition lockout | Gas on, condensate pipe not frozen |
Code meanings can differ between Ideal models. Check your model’s manual.
What not to do
Do not open the boiler case, clean the condensate trap from inside, or touch the gas valve. That is gas work and must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, turn off the gas at the meter if safe, open windows and do not use switches.
Warranty
Ideal says its warranties run from 2 to 12 years depending on the model, but may be limited to 12 months if not registered within 30 days of installation. If your boiler is still in warranty, contact Ideal before booking a repair. Check your guarantee certificate for any servicing conditions and keep your service records. Our post on missed services and warranties covers the main makers.
Prevention
- A yearly service cleans the condensate trap and checks the electrodes, two common causes of L2.
- The engineer checks system pressure, the expansion vessel and the relief valve, the usual causes of F1.
- Ask about the condensate pipe route if your boiler has locked out on cold mornings before.
Other Ideal codes you may see
Ideal boilers use other codes too, and meanings vary between ranges. Common ones relate to temperature sensors, fan faults and overheating. Your user manual has the full list for your model. Before you call, write down the code exactly as shown, including any letters, and whether it appears straight away or after the boiler has been running. That helps the engineer bring the right parts and can save a second visit. A photo of the display is even better.
Booking a repair
When you book, tell us:
- The model, such as Logic Combi or Vogue
- The code and how often it appears
- What you have already checked
- Whether the condensate pipe runs outside
Gas work in the UK must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the engineer’s ID card and the Gas Safe Register.
Quick questions
Can I reset an Ideal boiler with an L2 code?
Yes, once, after checking the gas supply and condensate pipe. If L2 returns, leave it off and book a repair.
What pressure should an Ideal boiler be at?
Check your manual. Many sealed systems sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold.
My Ideal is in warranty. What should I do?
Contact Ideal first. Warranty repairs are usually arranged through the maker.
