Short answer: Worcester Bosch says yearly servicing is a condition of its guarantee and must be done each year, by a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas boilers. A Greenstar service covers the gas supply, burner, heat exchanger, seals, electrodes, condensate trap, flue and a combustion test. In London, combi hot water flow and the condensate route deserve extra attention.
Worcester Bosch Greenstar boilers are among the most common in London homes. If you have one, keeping up with the yearly service matters for safety, reliability and the guarantee.
What Worcester’s guarantee says
Worcester Bosch’s in guarantee service page says:
- Yearly servicing is a condition of the manufacturer’s guarantee and must be completed each year to keep the guarantee valid.
- Services must always be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas boilers, or an OFTEC registered technician for oil boilers.
Worcester also says an annual service helps make sure the boiler runs as efficiently and safely as possible. Guarantee lengths vary by model and how the boiler was registered, so check your certificate.
What the service covers
| Check | Notes |
|---|---|
| Gas working pressure | Measured at the boiler |
| Case off, combustion chamber inspected | Burner, heat exchanger, seals |
| Electrodes | Worn electrodes cause ignition faults |
| Condensate trap | Cleaned. Greenstar boilers lock out if the trap or pipe blocks |
| Fan and flue | Including the terminal outside |
| Combustion test | Readings compared with Worcester’s figures |
| System pressure, expansion vessel, relief valve | Pressure faults |
| Controls | Thermostat, timer, any smart controls |
| Hot water flow on combis | Scale check |
| Magnetic filter | Cleaned if fitted |
Hard water on Greenstar combis
London’s water is hard. Thames Water says all the water in its region is hard. Greenstar combis heat tap water through a plate heat exchanger, where scale builds up. The engineer runs a hot tap and checks flow and temperature at the service, and checks any scale reducer on the cold feed. Our post on London hard water and combis explains more.
The condensate route and winter lockouts
Worcester boilers are condensing boilers, so they drain acidic water through a condensate pipe. If that pipe runs outside and freezes in a cold snap, the boiler locks out. A common Worcester code in that situation is EA 227, meaning no flame was detected. Our post on frozen condensate pipes explains how to thaw it safely. At the service, ask the engineer to look at the route if your boiler has stopped on cold mornings before.
Clapham conversions with Worcester combis
In Clapham, many Victorian houses have been split into flats, and Worcester combis in kitchen wall units are very common. The cupboard space matters: the engineer needs room to take the front panel off and work inside. Clear the cupboard before the visit. If the flue goes through a rear wall near a newer extension or window, the engineer checks the terminal is still in a safe position. Our Clapham area page covers the housing.
Finding your boiler details
| Where | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Front panel | Model name, such as Greenstar 4000, 8000 Life or older Greenstar i or Si |
| Data badge | Full model, serial number, gas type |
| Benchmark checklist in the manual | Install date and service history |
| Worcester’s website | Registration, if done |
Warranty repairs
If your Worcester boiler breaks down while it is in guarantee, contact Worcester Bosch first. Most makers handle in guarantee repairs through their own engineers. Keep your service records ready, as you may be asked for them.
Missed a service?
If you have missed a yearly service, book as soon as you can and contact Worcester to ask where you stand. Our post on missed services and warranties covers what to do.
When to book
About 12 months after the last service. Spring and summer are easiest. London search data shows demand for boiler services in October running at about four times May and June.
Common Worcester faults a service catches
Many Worcester breakdowns trace back to parts that a yearly service checks.
| Symptom | Common cause | Checked at service? |
|---|---|---|
| Boiler will not light, EA 227 | Frozen or blocked condensate, worn electrode, gas supply | Trap cleaned, electrode checked |
| Pressure drops | Flat expansion vessel, relief valve, leak | Vessel and valve checked |
| Hot water swings hot and cold | Scale in plate heat exchanger, diverter valve | Hot water flow tested |
| Radiators cold at the bottom | Sludge | Filter cleaned if fitted |
If your Greenstar shows a code, note it exactly before resetting. The user manual lists codes for your model.
Getting ready for the visit
Clear the kitchen cupboard or wall unit around the boiler, move anything stored underneath, and find the manual if you can. The engineer will fill in the Benchmark service record. If you have smart controls, have the app to hand in case settings need checking.
Booking
On our boilers we service page you can book a Worcester Bosch service. Tell us the model, age, where it is, and the date of the last service.
Gas work in the UK must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Check the ID card and the Gas Safe Register.
Quick questions
Does Worcester Bosch have to do the service?
No. Worcester says services must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer for gas boilers. It does not have to be Worcester itself.
What is EA 227 on a Worcester boiler?
It usually means no flame was detected after ignition. In cold weather, a frozen condensate pipe is a common cause.
How do I find my Worcester model?
The model name, such as Greenstar 4000 or 8000, is on the front. The data badge under the boiler or behind the front panel shows the full details.
